General VoIP Questions

Q: What is VoIP?
A:
VoIP stands for Voice Over Internet Protocol. Simply put, VoIP is the encoding of voice communications and using the internet as the method of transfering that communication. VoIP has been made popular within the last several years through companies like Vonage and Skype which have been able to connect millions of people through this communication protocol. Many traditional telephone companies, calling card services, and VoIP providers use this growing technology to not only to increase global coverage, but to also bring their customers better national and international telephony rates.

Q: How does VoIP compare with conventional calling systems?
A:  Traditional calling systems relying on the phone companies copper lines to route calls throughout the world. VoIP uses the internet as its method of transfering communication. Traditional copper calling is limited to analog signals, and cannot encode or transfer digital content or infomation.  VoIP offers a digitial encoding that allows telephone users the ability of viewing and transfering digitial information (large files, videos, streaming video, etc.).

Q: Can I still have a local or another number with VoIP?
A:
Yes, you can still have a local number (also known as a DiD) with VoIP. In fact you can have a number in almost country and when people ring that number, it will ring your phone no matter where you are located. You may also have several numbers throughout the world. Voice Stream Data charges a nominal monthly fee for local, other state numbers and international numbers. The virtual number is an ideal solution for any company or people who do business in multiple locations and need multiple vPOPs (Virtual Points of Presence). Calling Questions

Q: Can I track all my calls?

The call history will display call hiistory by the month as well as number of calls, the average rate, minutes used, total time, total cost and the ASR (VoIP quality measurement).

Q:
How do I dial an International phone number?
A:
Dialing an international number is easy adn works the same way an analog phone works. From a touchtone phone, once you hear a dial tone, enter the county code and the number. You may have to wait up to 15 seconds for the call to complete as the call is routed through the internet and may take longer than expceted. In most cases, the call will connect faster than analog lines.

Q: Why does my VoIP phone sound broken up when I call?
A: The one down side to VoIP is that it relies on the internet to communicate, And while internet has come a long way, there are still issues with reliability as it applies to the end users, but not at the source. We suggest resetting your phone or ATA box first and foremost. Some IP phones also offer filter and other speed and encoding adjustments to help fix this and other bandwidth issues. See your manufacturers website or user guide for more information. You may also contact your internet provider and explore greater bandwidth options or othe fixes to address the phone issue(s). The good news is that many communities and cities around the world are going wireless, so your phone's connection will be as reliable or more so than your current cell phone connection.
